Laylat al-Qadr 2017

Date:
Thursday, June 22, 2017

Laylat al-Qadr (Lailatul Qadr') (also known as Shab-e-Qadr ) is believed to be the night when the first verses of Quran were revealed to Muhammad the Prophet.

It is thought to take place at the end of the month of Ramadan.

There is no exact date, but many traditions insist on celebrating it on the night before the 27th of Ramadan.

Most Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed from Allah in two phases.

First it was revealed in its entirety to the angel Jibrayil in the lowest heaven.

Subsequently Jibrayil revealed it to Muhammad verse-by-verse across 23 years.

The first verses were revealed to Muhammad on Laylat al-Qadr.

They were the first five verses of the 95th sura (chapter) of the Quran, Sūrat al-ʿalaq.

The date of Laylat al-Qadr is unclear.

Both Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims observe it on one of the odd nights during the last ten days of Ramadan.

The night before the 27th of Ramadan is the most common variant among the Sunni Muslims whereas many Shia Muslims observe Laylat al-Qadr on the night of the 23rd of Ramadan.
